The City of Busselton is planning to turn a site near Yallingup (on Vidler Road) into a regional waste hub. Over the next 20 years this plan would see up to two million tonnes of waste from Busselton and beyond permanently dumped on our community and on the border of the iconic Leeuwin Naturaliste National Park.

This is the wrong place for a dump and the wrong future for our iconic region.

The City of Busselton is planning to turn a site near Yallingup (on Vidler Road) into a regional waste hub. Over the next 20 years this plan would see up to two million tonnes of waste from Busselton and beyond permanently dumped on our community and on the border of the iconic Leeuwin Naturaliste National Park.

This is the wrong place for a dump and the wrong future for our iconic region.

Why this matters:

  • The wrong place for a regional waste dump. Yallingup and the Capes region is an iconic nature and tourism area, not a place for a regional waste dump. This plan will allow nearly 100,000 tonnes of liquid and solid waste every years to be permanently dumped next to our community and next to a National Park for decades.
  • No consultation or assessment. The City has not consulted residents or the broader community and have not undertaken any environmental impact assessment.
  • Contamination risks. Existing operations at the site are already leaching toxic chemicals into groundwater including PFAS, benzene, arsenic, lead and mercury.
  • Environmental Department questioned the location. The state environmental regulator has previously raised concerns about the suitability of the site for landfill. No EPA Environmental assessment has ever been done on the site.
  • Poor planning, uncosted liability. The City has not considered alternatives, and a promised strategy to divert 60% of waste from landfill has not been delivered.
  • Traffic and safety. This plan will see more than 60 daily truck movements transporting hundreds of tonnes of waste along Caves Road every day.
  • Tourism and identity at risk. The drawcard for Yallingup and the Capes is the unspoiled natural landscape. A permanent regional waste dump puts these values under threat.

Dear CEO, Mayor and Councillors

The Capes region is internationally recognised for its outstanding environmental, cultural and tourism values and is one of Western Australia's most important natural landscapes.

I am strongly opposed to plans that will turn a site near Yallingup into a regional waste hub for Busselton and beyond. This is the wrong place for a regional waste dump and the wrong future for the iconic Yallingup and Capes region.

I am calling for the City, Mayor, and Elected members to halt the regional waste hub expansion; and instead develop a sustainable waste management strategy.

This must be done in consultation with the community and must protect Yallingup and the Capes region from being turned into a permanent rubbish dump for millions of tonnes of waste.
